Ohio’s Afterschool
Initiative promotes activities in the afterschool
environment that provide academic, physical,
and developmental opportunities for children
and youth. Each Child Care Resource and Referral
agency in Ohio has an Afterschool Specialist
who is committed to working with all persons
and programs that have school age children
as part of their program.
Afterschool programs enrich the lives of children and help them enjoy time in
a nurturing environment, and excel in school and life. When we say “afterschool” we
refer to anytime outside the regular school day. Before/after school, weekend,
and summer are all times when children and youth need to be engaged in activities
while not in their parents care.
The Afterschool Specialist in each R & R is available to assist with areas
such as:
Training – how
to help students with academics,
quality issues you face, or expansion
of current program.
Networking – what
other afterschool activities are
happening in your community.
Accreditation – what
does it mean to be accredited and
what do you need to do.
Quality – what
is the generally accepted measure
of quality in afterschool programs.
Resources – a
variety of books, games, materials,
and other learning materials are
available for you to use to enhance
your program.
Start-up
or expansion – how do you
start, what do you need to do.
Licensing – what
does it mean, what do you have
to do.
Referrals – assist
parents to identify programs that
are available to their children.
